While your MOT and Service fall under the umbrella of routine car maintenance, you might be shocked as to how different they actually are. That’s why it’s so important to keep up with both.

At National, we make that super easy – because you can book them both together! Yep, that’s one booking, one time slot, one trip to the garage. It’s also one super saving, because you’ll pay up to £24.99* less with one of our combi deals

But what’s the difference between an MOT and a Service? Do you even need both? We’re here to break down the facts and explain why they’re both so important.

What is checked on an MOT?

In this annual test, a technician will make sure that your car meets the legal, safety, and environmental standards required to be considered roadworthy in the UK.

While a pass will give you the peace of mind that your car’s structurally safe to drive, what most people don’t realise is that an MOT doesn’t check your engine, any of your fluids, your spare tyre if you have one or anything more intensive. In fact, your car could even break down when it’s not serviced regularly. Scary, right?

That’s where a regular service comes in.

What does a car service include?

If an MOT is a quick check-up, think of your full or major service as a full-length annual exam. It’s much more thorough than an MOT, giving you a full inspection of all the vital areas of your car, along with changing some of the parts that need replacing.

A full or major service will usually include an oil and filter change, which will help keep your engine happy, a brake fluid change to help you stop when you need to, and new air and pollen filters to ensure your airflow is fresh and clean.

Regular servicing helps to avoid breakdowns and keep you and your car happy, and combining it with your MOT is a great way to save time and money.

Is it legal to drive without an MOT certificate?

Nope. Unless your car is under three years old (in which case you don’t need an MOT yet), it’s illegal to drive without an MOT and it can invalidate your car insurance, even if you’re still paying for your policy.

Don’t fret though – you CAN drive to a pre-booked test at an authorised test centre without an MOT as long as the car doesn’t have any serious, dangerous faults that make it unroadworthy.

How often should you service your car?

While not legally required like an MOT, we still recommend a regular service to keep your car at its best. There are three different kinds of service:

- An Interim Service, perfect for in-between MOTs
- A Full Service, for once-a-year performance-boosting
- A Major Service, for a complete inspection every two years

You can book your service based on either miles or months. We recommend an interim service every 6 months or 6,000 miles, a full service every 12 months or 12,000 miles, and a major service every other year or 24,000 miles.

How much is an MOT and Service?

One major perk of booking your MOT & Service together is the price – you’ll make some big savings! Our combi deal gives you a better price on these essential checks, saving you up to £24.99*!
