Why check your car’s MOT date?

According to a 2021 survey by TotalEnergies, as many as 9 million drivers – 28% of the UK total – don’t know when their next MOT is. There are many reasons why checking your car’s MOT date is crucial.

Firstly, keeping your vehicle’s MOT certificate up to date is a legal requirement. If you don’t do it, you won’t be able to arrange tax, insurers won’t cover you, and as a result, you’ll open yourself up to a wide range of fines, including a £1,000 fine for the lack of an MOT itself.

Second, if you don’t know when your MOT is due, then you may find yourself discovering when perilously close to the MOT certificate expiry date. If this happens, you may find it difficult to book an appointment from an approved MOT test centre; one that has good prices or a sound reputation. This can make for a stressful and time-consuming situation.

Missing your MOT due date can also mean you miss out on deals. You may have to go with your second or third-choice MOT test provider that doesn’t have good MOT offers, such as MOT and servicing deals, one further away from you (requiring you to pay more in travel costs), or one that requires expensive fixes due to a job done poorly.

Lastly, if you don’t find out when your MOT is due and don’t get the test performed, you won’t know of any potential issues with your car – problems that you can ask your mechanic to work on next time you get a service.

Instead, it’s much simpler to learn when your car MOT is due ahead of time. Use our tool to make sure you know when yours is.

As such, if you get your MOT performed and pass on a date that’s very close to or on your renewal date, it can be a good idea to keep your certificate in the car for a week or so.
